TheCityUK announces successor chairs for its Board, Leadership Council and Next Generation Leadership Council

TheCityUK has appointed successor chairs for its Board, Leadership Council and Next Generation Leadership Council (NGLC) as current chairs reach the end of their terms. Omar Ali, Global Financial Services Leader at EY, will take up the role of Board Chair, succeeding Anne Richards DBE, Vice Chair of Fidelity International. Anne Richards will succeed Bruce Carnegie-Brown, Chairman of Lloyd’s, as Leadership Council Chair and Sir Edward Braham, Chair of M&G plc, will take over from Bruce as NGLC Chair.

Omar Ali and Anne Richards will take up their respective Board and Leadership Council Chair roles on 1 July 2025. Sir Edward Braham will assume the role of NGLC Chair from 1 April 2025.

As Board Chair, Omar will be focused on delivering members’ priorities and ensuring continued progress on executing the organisation’s strategic priorities as it continues to champion the success of UK-based financial and related professional services. He will also work closely with Anne in her role as Leadership Council Chair. Anne will lead a forum that brings together the most senior practitioners from across the industry with key policymakers and stakeholders. The Leadership Council also provides support to deliver the organisation’s strategy.

As Chair of the NGLC, Sir Edward will spearhead a group of practitioners identified by their firms as future industry leaders. Members bring fresh perspectives and challenges to TheCityUK’s work, as well as getting exposure to a unique range of leadership development opportunities.

Omar Ali, TheCityUK Board Chair Designate, said, “I am honoured to have been appointed as incoming Board Chair at TheCityUK, and look forward to leading a progressive agenda for our industry as it contends with rapidly evolving technology, geopolitical and macro-economic challenges, and changing demographics across society. The UK has an ambitious reform agenda to safeguard its position as an internationally competitive and leading financial hub, and TheCityUK plays a critical role in supporting its implementation. Anne leaves a strong legacy, and I look forward to building on the work she has done, working closely with members and stakeholders to ensure the UK’s financial services industry remains a global centre of excellence.”

Anne Richards DBE, TheCityUK Leadership Council Chair Designate, said, “Omar is a great successor to the Board Chair role, not least given his deep understanding of the industry and extensive global network. For my part, I am delighted to be continuing to stay well engaged with TheCityUK, heading up its Leadership Council and advocating for such an important industry. Bruce has done an outstanding job during his term as Chair, and I will seek to further build on his good efforts, working closely with Omar as Board Chair and Edward as Chair of the NGLC.”

Sir Edward Braham, TheCityUK Next Generation Leadership Council Chair Designate, said, “Nurturing our pipeline of future leaders is a key priority for firms across the financial and related professional services sectors. The Next Generation Leadership Council is a fantastic group of individuals, with the aptitude and mindset to drive change and lead our industry into the future. The opportunity to help guide and encourage them to share their perspectives and challenge the status quo is one that I’m very excited about. I am extremely grateful to Bruce for his excellent work as NGLC Chair and I look forward to taking on the role in April.”
