Business Development Executive

Reporting to (job title): Commercial Director

Objective of role:

Successfully supporting the delivery of TheCityUK’s growth plans, the Business Development Executive will play a key role by:

  • Researching and understanding the needs of potential members (targets) of TheCityUK.
  • Supporting the generation and management of a relevant and healthy pipeline of member targets.
  • Drafting communications to contact targets to secure sales meetings for TheCityUK.
  • Preparing materials to support sales meetings with targets.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for researching and qualifying new business leads (targets) to approach about membership.
  • Agree which targets to prioritise with the Commercial Director and Account Manager (Business Development).
  • Preparation of focused letters and/or email approaches for the Commercial Director and other sales leads to send, using a variety of appropriate formats and styles.
  • Follow up written approaches via the telephone to persuasively secure sales meetings for the Commercial Director and other sales leads with C-suite individuals.
  • Know TheCityUK’s top targets and be proactive in suggesting opportunities to engage them in work, by discussing possible hooks for membership with the Commercial Director and Account Manager (Business Development) - identify these ‘hooks’ by researching news stories, spotting alignment with TheCityUK policy interests, events etc.
  • Research corporate websites, social media and industry websites to prepare sales meeting briefings/proposals as required for target meetings and any subsequent follow
  • Work collaboratively with other colleagues to achieve overall team sales approaches and meeting targets.
  • Maintain and drive effective use of CRM data.
  • Any other ad-hoc duties that maybe required.

Key Relationships & Interfaces

Internal:

  • TheCityUK Member Insight Team, including the Commercial Director and Account Manager (Business Development).
  • TheCityUK’s Executive Committee, Senior Management Group and other colleagues.

External:

  • Key support contacts within target organisations, such as Executive and Personal Assistants.
  • Other external influencers as appropriate to develop TheCityUK’s commercial proposition.

Person Specification

  • Some experience in business development and lead generation is essential.
  • Assisting with the management of a sales pipeline, preferably from having worked or currently working in a membership organisation.
  • Desire to move into a sales lead role in the future.
  • Experience of working with CRM systems is essential.
  • Highly organised, self-starter, confident in dealing with very senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to summarise information and and actions from group meetings.
  • Good Microsoft skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, CRM).
  • Pro-active approach and uses own initiative.
  • Ability to prioritise and maintain a calm demeanour.
  • Professional/financial services experience (desirable but not essential).
  • Higher education such as A Levels and/or relevant experience.
